NFL Star to present Wolverines end of season awards
Johnny Mitchell
The Lancashire Wolverines and Lancashire Wolverine Colts American Football teams received an excellent piece of news today, as ex-NFL star Johnny Mitchell confirmed that he will attend their annual end of season presentation evening to present the awards. Johnny Mitchell played for both the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys in a five year career, and he now lives in Southport, and is a presenter of the NFL on Sky Sports.

This piece of news comes as interest in the NFL is at a high in this country, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New England Patriots due to duel it out in a competive game at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. This is the third year that the NFL has brought a game to England, and each of the previous years has been a resounding success.

The Wolverine Colts are coming off a particularly successful year having recently narrowly lost out to the Farnham Knights in the National Final at Doncaster Rovers' Keepmoat Stadium. The awards evening is open to anyone interested in attending, and is being held at Blackburn RUFC on 6th November. Tickets for the evening cost £15 for adults and £10 for under-16s. Proud Colts fall at final hurdle
Colts vs Farnham Knights
The Lancashire Wolverine Colts took to the field of Doncaster’s Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday 26th September, in search of a British Youth American Football, National Final win. Buoyed by the travelling support and a fantastic atmosphere, the “Men in Black” faced the Farnham Knights.

From the Colts opening the kick-off the Farnham Knights returned the ball to the Colt’s 25-yard line. With great field position, starting on offence so close to the end-zone, the Knights took an early lead when quarterback Joe Thompson sneaked in for a touchdown following two good runs from Dominic Gould. The Knights converted the extra point kick, which in youth football scores two points, giving the Knights an 8-0 lead.

Refusing to be shaken from the early setback the Colts went on offence after their first kick-off return looking to respond. The drive started promisingly with some good rushing gains and then quarterback Jonny Glover passed for seventeen yards to Joel Wilson who extended for an excellent catch. However, the Colts progression was unfortunately halted by penalties eventually forcing a punt from Chris Astley. The half was rounded out with both teams trading possession of the ball although the Colts did successfully block a Knight’s field goal preventing a further 3 points.

The early second half continued in a similar fashion to the end of the first half until a Colt’s punt was blocked. Taking an ill-fated bounce through the back of the Colt’s end-zone, the Knights were awarded a safety. The resultant 2 points stretched the score line to 10-0. Valiantly attempting a comeback, the Colts held kept the Knights from scoring further points with a stretch of brilliant defensive play and the offence once more knocked on the door for a Colt’s touchdown. Despite their immense effort the Colts came up just short and with both teams tiring, the Knights nicked a second touchdown late in the game courtesy of Jerry Mehanchi. The Colts proved their great character, determined still to fight on every play, by stopping the extra points attempt leaving the final score at 16-0.

Head Coach Geoff Leigh, proud of his Colts, said, “I am delighted with the performance of my team yesterday. It was a tough game against a formidable Knights unit and the boys played with heart and soul. We've learned a lot from the experience which will help us to build for next season”. Unfortunately, the Colts could not cap off a tremendous season with the National trophy but nevertheless the effort and quality of their play this season is deserving of an incredibly large amount of praise for each and every member of the team.

Colt Nation Get Ready! Not for Superbowl Sunday but Britbowl Saturday
It’s inching closer and closer. The anticipation and adrenaline is mounting for Saturday’s British Youth American Football Final. The Colt Nation is ready for Britbowl Saturday.

So here’s the scoop for Saturday’s huge event:

Who: Lancashire Wolverine Colts vs. Farnham Fast Lane Knights
What: British Youth American Football National Final
Where: Keepmoat Stadium, Doncaster
When: Saturday 26th September, 3:00pm

Story So Far...
Colts - The Colts have enjoyed a tremendous unbeaten season en route to the final dominating all those in their path to Saturday’s showpiece. During the regular season the team’s stellar defence refused to concede a single point whilst the high powered offence continually racked up the points. By virtue of winning their division and maintaining a perfect record through the regular season, the Colts secured home field advantage throughout the post season.

First up in the Quarter Finals was the Forth Valley Fusion. The Colts continued their impressive streak moving past the Fusion. Getting stronger and stronger on both offence and defence the Colts progressed to the Northern Final with a place in Doncaster’s Final on the line. Facing the previously unbeaten Gateshead Senators, who had broken the Colts post-season dreams last year, the Colts again stepped up to the plate with a dynamic display. Refusing to give the Senators and their vaunted double wing offence a single point whilst constructing a great offensive performance of their own, the Colts ran out 18-0 winners to deservedly book their place in the National Final.

Knights - The Knights have enjoyed a similarly great season and progressed with an excellent record. Impressive wins have been much the order of the season, highlighted by such victories as their 53-6 win over the Kent Exiles and a 46-0 win over the Maidestone Pumas. The Knights did have one loss on the regular season going down 26-21 to the London Warriors. However, they atoned for that defeat with revenge against their rivals in the post-season. The Knights also moved past the Birmingham Bulls in the Play-offs to make it to the National Final.

Headset Games
Colts - The Colts offence has proven effective all season with the team exhibiting a potent rushing attack interspersed with a strong passing game. Rushing for over a hundred yards and with passing touchdowns in each of the post-season games, the Colts go into the final with quiet confidence in their offence. Meanwhile, the defence has been hugely effective, giving up just six points all season. They have been strong against both the run and pass and will need to bring their A-game again on Saturday as they face potentially their best offensive opponent to date.

Knights - The Knights have a potent offence and exceeded 30 points in scoring in four of the first six games. As their post-season opponents got tougher, the Knights did not put up as many points but obviously remained tough on defence and efficient enough on offence to outscore their opponents. Expect good solid play from both units and special teams as well on Saturday.

The History
As two excellent youth teams from two strong British American Football Clubs, it is no surprise that when we look to the history books we find three previous Youth National Finals between the teams. Both teams have triumphed to lift the trophy and be crowned National Champions. The rivalry recommences Saturday.

Pardon the cliché but it’s so close you can almost taste it.

Bucs get more National success.

On Sunday 13th September, 6 of the Buccaneers had trials for the Great Britain Lions Flag set up. Rachel Hull for the Youth team and Derry Holt, Matt Holt, Arron Taylor, Jonny Tickle and Will Powley all tried out for a place in the Junior team. All 6 players had a great day and gave it their all, doing both themselves and their club proud. However only 3 of the 6 candidates got selected for the Squads.

Rachel Hull got selected for the youth to make it her second time for being selected for the National Squad. Matt Holt and Jonny Tickle were selected for Junior team to make it their first National appearance for the Lions and also another two names to add to the list of Bucs that have made the National Squad. Derry Holt and Will Powley unfortunately did not make the squad but gave a great account of themselves both on Offence and Defence. Arron Taylor also missed out on being selected but had an awesome day at QB not really faltering once but unfortunately came up against very strong competition. As well as all the players being involved in the camp, Chorley Buccaneers Club Manager and Junior Kitted Head Coach Ian Nicolson was also on board the coaching staff as the Junior Flag Defensive Coordinator, making it an impressive 5 out of 5 campaigns for him since 2003.

After the day, Coach Nicolson said: "Today was a great day for the Bucs with every candidate from our club doing themselves and the club proud. It is always hard to be a national coach and see some of your own players not get selected and see them upset but they should all be very proud of themselves for how they did today, as I know that I am proud of them all."

The Lions will be competing against Mo' Steele Flag Football team on Sunday 4th October. Mo' Steele are one of the best flag football teams in the world and this will be a great experience for the 3 Bucs that have been selected. This now puts the total number of Buccaneers that have been selected for their Country up to 6 players not including those that have been selected more than once.
